Christmas Tree Churros

Christmas Tree Churros are a wonderful, crispy, and delicious themed treat that’s sure to impress during the holiday season.

Christmas Tree Churros
We first came across Christmas Tree Churros last year on the blogs of two fellow international bloggers, Shivesh Bhatia and Crowded Kitchen. They seemed so amazing that they stayed in our minds all the way until this year, when I finally made them as a “last-minute” Christmas dessert. It’s an incredibly simple recipe that turns out not only delicious but also adorable—and kids love it too.

For a festive Christmas

Here are the top reasons to make them:

  • They instantly create a festive, Christmas vibe – visually stunning and beautifully seasonal, making them the perfect dessert for December, Christmas Eve, or holiday gatherings.
  • Easy and quick to prepare – though freezing them helps achieve a nicer shape.
  • Loved by both kids and adults – our kids were circling the dessert like cats around hot porridge, absolutely thrilled.
  • Perfect for gatherings – ideal for Christmas parties, December birthdays, or as a sweet treat alongside mulled wine or hot cocoa.
  • You can decorate them any way you like and serve them with chocolate sauce for an irresistible finish.

Serving ideas

This time we chose two versions. I dusted some with cinnamon sugar, and others—with a more festive touch—with matcha and sugar. Aren’t they beautiful?

They’re also delicious with these toppings and sauces:

  • Vanilla sugar – a classic that’s always tasty
  • Finely ground coconut flour – for a snowy effect
  • Sugar mixed with freeze-dried raspberries or strawberries for a pop of red
  • Chocolate sprinkles – especially fun for kids
  • White or milk chocolate sauce
  • Caramel sauce

Make ahead and storing

Churros can be prepared and piped onto a baking tray in advance, then stored in the freezer for up to one month. When ready to fry, simply place them directly into the preheated oil.

These churros are best served immediately, on the same day, but they will still be good the next day as well.

METHOD

  • dough

Place the all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, vanilla, and salt in a bowl and mix well. In a larger saucepan, add the water and butter. Once the mixture comes to a boil, stir in the dry ingredients and immediately remove from the heat. Mix with a spoon until everything comes together into a smooth, thick dough. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing with an electric mixer. Add the second egg only once the first is fully incorporated.

  • shape

Prepare a piping bag fitted with a 1 cm star-shaped tip and fill it with the dough. Line a large baking tray with parchment paper and pipe the Christmas tree shapes onto it. Place the tray in the freezer for at least 2–3 hours, or overnight.

  • fry

Pour oil for frying into a deep pan and heat it to 170–180°C (340–355°F). Once the oil is hot, add the churros. Fry 4–6 churros at a time to give them enough space to move and to prevent the oil from cooling down too much. Fry the churros for 3–4 minutes, or until they are evenly golden brown.
Remove the churros with a slotted spatula and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels. Repeat the process until all the dough is used.

  • serve

In a small bowl, mix together sugar and ground cinnamon. Roll the churros evenly in the mixture.
Optionally, you can mix the sugar with matcha to decorate the churros with green sugar for a festive touch. Serve warm.
